Hoedspruit punches far above its weight at the dinner table. For a Lowveld town of fewer than 10,000 residents, the gateway to the Greater Kruger serves up everything from tapas on an actual Boeing wing to curries beside the Olifants River. This guide, written by the team at Aerotel — South Africa's only aircraft hotel, right here on the Zandspruit Bush & Aero Estate — covers the 10 restaurants we send our own guests to, plus the one we run ourselves.

A note on how this list works: we've included our own restaurant, The Runway, because leaving it out would be strange. Everything else is here on merit — these are the places Hoedspruit locals actually eat.

1. The Runway Restaurant at Aerotel

The Runway is Hoedspruit's only aviation-themed restaurant, set among two preserved Boeing aircraft with the northern Drakensberg as a backdrop. There are exactly three dining spaces: the Sky Deck (an elevated terrace with arguably the best sunset view in town), the Pool Deck, and a traditional Boma. The signature experience is sundowners served on the wing of a real Boeing 737 — MCC, craft gintails, and South African-inspired tapas, daily from 16:30 to 19:30.

Order the parathas. They're the real deal — flaky, properly layered, cooked so the edges crisp while the middle stays soft. After years of bad imitations elsewhere, these are the genuine article: order two and you'll wish you'd ordered three.

Day visitors are welcome (Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00–20:00), and booking ahead is strongly recommended — wing seating is limited for obvious structural reasons. Breakfast is reserved for hotel guests.

Best for: Sundowners, the parathas, special occasions, the photo your friends won't believe Booking: aerotel.co.za/restaurant

2. The Hat & Creek

Hoedspruit's long-standing grill house, opposite the Kamogelo Tourism Centre on the main road. The Hat & Creek does elegant bush dining: game platters, seafood, and properly aged steaks, backed by one of the deepest wine lists in town. A fireside boma, free Wi-Fi, and a play area for under-10s make it work equally well for date night and family dinner.

Best for: Steak, game meat, and a serious wine list

3. Sleepers Railway Station Restaurant

Built into Hoedspruit's original small train station alongside the railway line, Sleepers is the town's living room. The walls are papered with vintage newspapers, the menu runs from wood-fired pizzas to grills, and the pub is where local rangers congregate after game drives. If you want to overhear genuine bush stories, this is the room.

Best for: Atmosphere, pizza, and rubbing shoulders with guides

4. Harvest House

A local favourite for fresh, high-quality plates with a long view of the Drakensberg mountains. Harvest House leans modern and seasonal — the kind of kitchen that makes vegetarians and health-conscious travellers genuinely happy in a town famous for meat.

Best for: Fresh, contemporary food with a mountain view

5. Three Bridges Restaurant

Worth the 20 km drive along the R40 towards Phalaborwa, Three Bridges sits at The Outpost overlooking the Olifants River. The Indian chicken curry is the dish locals order on repeat, and the pizza list is more inventive than it has any right to be. Combine it with a late-afternoon river view and it's a proper Lowveld outing.

Best for: Curry, river views, a slow Sunday lunch

6. Hoedspruit Café

The town's go-to daytime spot in the Kamogelo Centre — strong coffee, generous breakfasts, freshly baked treats, and what is widely agreed to be the best kids' play area in Hoedspruit. Opening evenings vary, so check ahead for dinner.

Best for: Breakfast, coffee, and travelling with small children

7. The Thirsty Giraffe

Relaxed, reliable, and consistently good — the Thirsty Giraffe covers pizzas through to hearty South African plates in an easy-going setting. It's the answer to "where can we all agree on?" when a group has mixed tastes.

Best for: Easy group dinners

8. Kalimambo Restaurant & Pub

Also in the Kamogelo Centre, Kalimambo specialises in Indian cuisine with a Chinese menu alongside and pub classics for the unadventurous member of the party. Portions are generous and prices are honest.

Best for: Indian food and value

9. Arugula

Set in the old Zandspruit farmhouse — on the same estate as Aerotel — Arugula serves excellent coffee and wholesome, healthy lunches. If you're staying with us, it's the closest table in town and an easy mid-morning stroll.

Best for: Healthy lunches and proximity to the aircraft

10. The Fig and Bean Café

A cheerful café stop known for its coffee, smoothies, and warm service — a regular feature on visitors' "we kept coming back" lists.

Best for: Coffee runs and light bites

Where to Watch the Sunset in Hoedspruit

The Lowveld sunset is the town's nightly main event. The Sky Deck at The Runway faces the northern Drakensberg directly and serves sundowners from 16:30 — in winter, plan to be seated by 17:00 to catch the full show. Three Bridges offers the river alternative, and Harvest House the mountain panorama. Whichever you choose, book ahead in the dry season (April–October), when the town fills with safari traffic.
